This is a multifaceted verse that says a lot about great generalities and also about a very specific city in the world today. Some think this is just the world and its worldliness while others think it is specifically talking about Rome sitting on 7 hills being the Roman Catholic Church. They say the original "spirit" of the Catholic Church was identified with the church of the Laodiceans. "And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, THE BEGINNING OF THE CREATION of God"; Revelation 3:14. The meaning here is that the Spirits of all 7 churches are 7 different shades of worldliness being alive and well from the creation of the world all the way through to even today. Those 7 spirits are still trying to affect Believers in Christ as Christ had something to say to them 2000 users ago and He has the same thing to say to the church today, being, Don't fall into the ways and thinking of the worldly aspects of each of these churches. Each of these 7 churches have their own theologies and ways of preaching their beliefs, just pick the one you like. Christ simply says, "Follow Me". IF this is true, that the church of the Laodiceans actually is the Roman Catholic Church sitting on the 7 hills of Rome, then she is also called "the Mother of Harlots". "And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration". Revelation 17:4-6.
